Experimenting with colour consistency for the double page spread image

I have already indicated in my brief that I desire a black and white tone to be employed onto my final two images for the poster and double page spread respectively as in my opinion I feel they will illiterate the death and destruction anorexia causes through the colours which will simply act as a messenger for this notion in a sense. Before transferring the final chosen image onto the double page spread I thought it would be necessary to experiment with unique black and white tones on photoshop, moreover I wanted my image to be as grungy and bleak as possible to attract a mature audience and to heighten the destruction and despair anorexia causes. For this task I uploaded a discarded image from my primary photo-shoot and experimented with the styles on this one rather then the final image as I was still undecided out of the three I potentially wanted to use. After uploading it I selected the adjustments menu on the right hand side bar and clicked on the first box that would allow me to alter the black and white shades. From then on I began trialling out separate styles to identify which was the most appoproate for my theme and image.

To begin with the initial style I tested was the 'darker' shade of black and white. Despite it saying it was a darker shade I felt as if the image want significantly justified at all. Importantly the body of the model has been altered to a darker coloration, which I am essentially pleased with as i want the anorexia to be emphasised as coherently as what possibly can be achieved. However its noticeable that not all of the model has been darkened as can be identified from her neckline to head area which is still lightened by a white flouresent glow rather then being encased in black like her body. personally I feel this specific style only heightens the darkness that is already displayed on the image so will focus on those points rather then the full image. Because I wanted the entire image to reflect that darker and mature tone I'm discarding this style as I don't not believe it meets the adult requirements I am aiming for.

I altered the black and white photo setting upon the image so it would alternate to a different shade, for this experiment I tested out the 'maximum black' category. First and foremost it is easily identifiable that the entire model has been dedicated to a significantly brutal looking black, her whole body is shrouded in darkness which personifies a mysterious yet serious look to her. I feel as if this particular style of black and white allows the mature message to be recognised within my work as the deep purgatory of the coloration implies that the article will be focusing on a very bleak topic that requires an individual to have a mature understanding otherwise it may be too distressing or hard to comprehend to them. Importantly it deters a younger audience as I am looking for an adult reception for my product. The more bolder black helps to emphasises the physical ailment of anorexia, as it highlights the more undernourished parts of her body including the legs and stomach area. From a distance I am instantly attracted to the image as it grasps immediate attention as the dark colours focus on the model and no other aspect so the viewer would be soley interested in the individual herself.  Out of the three trails I conducted this is my favourite style of black and white coloration and is what I will be using to display the main image for my double page spread article.

Out of plain curosity i decided to experiment with the 'lighter' shade of black and white as i was intrigued as to what it would appear as on the image. Already I can notice that it does lighten the darkness on the photograph, not to the extent I believed it would as I thought it may have brought out the original studio lighting more then what it had. A nice effect to be took into consideration is that unlike all the other  styles I tested this one lightens the models clothes to the extent that you can see the detail in the fabric of her jumper and the individual hairs in her head more clearly. This gives a lovely touch and overall effect to the image and although it looks professional I am discouraged by the extent the models head has bee lightened as the added white hues make her look more grey rather then the black and white i was going for. Her body has been brightened too much as well the effect gives me the impression the photograph looks more of a payed photo-shoot you would commercially see rather then one for a mainstreamTV listings magazine. Finally it loses the mature edge it had to be and for that reason alone I am discarding this style, without that mature slick appeal my product does no personify the message I indicated in m recce.
